Haldi is one of the most photographed and joyful pre-wedding ceremonies across all Indian traditions. A paste made of fresh turmeric, sandalwood, milk, and rosewater is applied to the bride and groom's skin by family members, blessing them and giving their skin a golden glow before the main wedding day.

The ceremony is typically held in the morning, in an open courtyard or garden, with bright yellow as the dominant colour. Family women take turns applying the paste with gentle teasing and laughter. In some regions, the men of the family then bathe the couple with the auspicious water from a kalash, symbolically washing away any inauspiciousness.

Beyond the spiritual symbolism — turmeric is considered protective and purifying in Ayurveda and Vedic tradition — modern Haldi celebrations have become full-fledged events with custom yellow-themed outfits, professional photography, music, and even Haldi-themed cocktails. In Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, Haldi pool parties have become a popular adaptation.

In coastal Odisha, Haldi often blends with the Mangala Snana ritual; in West Bengal it is paired with the Gae Halud day; in South India a similar ritual is performed with sandalwood paste instead.
