Nirbandha — literally "binding" in Sanskrit — is the formal engagement ceremony in Odia wedding tradition. Held weeks or months before the wedding, it is the point where the two families exchange engagement gifts, fix the wedding date in consultation with the family pundit, and exchange rings between the couple.

The Nirbandha ceremony is conducted at the bride's home or a banquet hall, with both immediate families and close relatives present. A senior elder from each side oversees the date-fixing using the kundali compatibility, ensuring the chosen muhurta is auspicious for the couple's stars. In coastal Odisha, families traditionally include a small puja at the start and a meal at the end.

Modern Nirbandha celebrations have expanded into evening events with decoration, a coordinated outfit theme, and professional photography. Many couples now use the ceremony as a casual "engagement party" with friends invited after the family ritual.

For pan-Indian families outside Odisha, the equivalent ceremony goes by names like Sagai, Mangni, or Sagaai — the structure is similar (rings exchanged, date fixed), but the rituals vary regionally.
